John F. Kennedy Institute – Culture Department: Research at the Department of Culture is concerned with American cultural history from the beginnings of European colonization to the present. Our course offerings explore North American culture and its contributions to modernity, as well as ongoing processes of cultural dehierarchization, hybridization, pluralization, and individualization.

Job description: Area 1 (winter term):
  • Supervising and implementing of the tutorial accompanying the course "Understanding North America A" within the field of culture. The tutorship requires comprehensive knowledge of cultural studies and the ability to teach it in English;
  • Assisting with the online Blackboard component of the course;
  • Assisting with course preparation, literature and media acquisition, scanning, copying etc.;
  • Preliminary screening of essays and other assignments (all student submissions are in English and some are handwritten);
  • Preparing and coordinating the concluding e-examination.
Job description Area 2 (summer term):

Supporting the instructors of the culture department in research and teaching, e.g. selecting and compiling lists of literature, participation in book pre-selection, proofreading, course preparation.

Desirable:

Students of North American Studies (BA students must have completed at least UNA and the orientation module).

Preferences:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of North American cultural studies;
  • strong research skills and knowledge of academic libraries and academic data bases;
  • Willingness to get acquainted with the available media technology for teaching and help maintain various digital platforms;
  • excellent knowledge of English (equivalent to C1) especially for teaching the tutorial;
  • strong organizational skills for the coordination of various subject tutorials and the communication with students and instructors;
  • Team skills for cooperation with the tutors of the other departments;
  • Availability for in-person tasks at the institute at least once a week during lecture time.
