Sönke Kunkel is Junior Professor of North American history at the John F. Kennedy-Institute for North American Studies at Freie Universität Berlin. He has published widely on the history of humanitarianism and development and is the author of Empire of Pictures: Global Media and the 1960s Remaking of American Foreign Policy (Berghahn, 2015). He has also co-edited Visions of Humanity: Historical Cultural Practices since 1850 (Berghahn, 2023) and is now working on a cultural history of transnational humanitarianism in the age of empires (1870s–1920s).
