USA expert Professor Christian Lammert on the midterms and the future of US President Biden and Donald Trump.
Election researchers predicted a redwave, even a tsunami. A grandiose victory for Donald Trump's Republicans in the U.S. Parliament, i.e. in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, was expected. But neither at the federal level nor in the gubernatorial elections at the state level have Republicans managed to generate convincing majorities.
One exception is Florida, where incumbent Ron DeSantis was re-elected with over 70% and could now become Donald Trump's intra-party rival in the 2024 presidential election. For the Democrats, U.S. President Joe Biden will soon have to decide whether to run again or leave the field to rivals lurking in the background, such as Kamela Harris, Pete Buttigieg or Gretchen Whitmer.
